Milked Two Cows each Morning Before Hitchhiking to High School 1943
I milked 2 cows each morning before hitchhiking to high school in 1943. We lived on a farm in Brownsville, Texas about 8 miles out of town and my mother and father had both grown up on a farm, so we had cows, chickens, hogs. So, every morning before going to school I had to go out and milk 2 cows, well nothing teaches you responsibility more than milking a cow because there is no such thing as skipping a day, you just don’t skip a day, you can’t it’s painful for the cow and the milk would dry up and so forth. So, every morning before I went to school and every evening before I went out on a date in high school I would milk 2 cows, and in the morning after milking 2 cows and getting dressed for school I would go out on the road and hitchhike to Brownsville, Texas about 8 miles away. Well World War II was going on, everybody picked up everybody in those days, so hitch hiking was no problem, the first one or two cards would pick you up.
